University Elementary is located about 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles in the community of Thousand Oaks. University is a small school in a quiet neighborhood about half a mile from the campus of California Lutheran University (hence the collegiate name). This California Distinguished and National Blue Ribbon School houses students in kindergarten through 5th grade in three classroom wings, and an expansive grassy field where students play a variety of games. The students’ parents are well educated and active in their children's academic and social lives.
University’s staff and parents are committed to maintaining an environment that encourages students to develop a sense of personal responsibility, self-respect, and respect for others. They value academic excellence, and acknowledge that striving for excellence is a continual process that is valued as much as the product of excellence itself. They are dedicated to helping children grow to their full potential as students, citizens and members of society.
University has regular-education classrooms, a resource center and an on-site kindergarten enrichment and childcare program. The Single-School Plan budget funds short-term after-school intervention classes for at-risk students and computer, physical education and reading specialists. University adheres to the district discipline policy and encourages a traditional elementary environment and dress code. The staff displays high expectations for student achievement and behavior and advocates the philosophy that we are all lifelong continual learners.
University benefits from a strong PTA that subsidizes field trips and classroom supplies;sponsors curricular extensions such as Family Science Night and Reflections art program; co-sponsors Math Night with the University staff; fully fundsthe monthly Art Masters program;and logs over 10,000 volunteer hours per year.
The School Site Council is comprised of five parents and five staff members and meets monthlyto identify and review progress toward improvement goals as identified in the Single-School Plan. Other parents attend monthly District Advisory Council (DAC) meetings and present reports to the School Site Council.
