Principal’s Message

I hope Parent-Teacher Conferences went well for everyone.  Although last week was dedicated to parent conferences, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at any point in time to discuss the progress of your son or daughter.  Email is always the best way to communicate with your child’s teacher and I ask that you grant teachers the courtesy of 24 hours to reply.  Our staff’s email addresses can be found on our school website:  www.universityelementary.com

Speaking of our website, if you have not been on there lately please be sure to take some time to click around.  Mrs. Jennifer Wilson, our PTA VP of Technology, has updated the website to include all levels of All-Star Math, information on Reading Counts (also see the back side of this page for Reading Counts information), information on the new EARTHS magnet school, and much, much more.  If you have ideas or suggestions for our website please feel free to email me: jrickert@conejo.k12.ca.us

IMPORTANT:  You should have received a letter from the District Office telling you your child’s assigned neighborhood school for next school year.  The letter also explains the open school choice policy for University parents.  The following is a summary…

“Families may choose any Conejo Valley Unified School District elementary school or the new Environmental Academy for Research Technology and Earth Science (EARTHS) magnet school.  Fifty spaces are being reserved at the EARTHS Magnet for University students. If you are interested in attending EARTHS, please attach a completed EARTHS application available online or in the Instructional Services Office.

“If you wish to participate in the ‘priority’ school choice application program, you need to submit this application to the Instructional Services Office, 1400 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks, by 5:00 pm on Friday, November 14, 2008.  Applications received by the deadline will be entered into a lottery. A family may submit only one application and each application will represent one entry in the lottery. Effort will be made to honor requests to keep siblings at the same school.  All first choice requests will be processed, then second choice requests, if any, etc.  A priority wait list will be established prior to the general school choice application period held in the Spring, 2009.

“Only one school choice submission is permitted for a given school year. A letter will be mailed to you by December 31, 2008 stating the status of your application. This letter will state if the application was approved, or the wait list number assigned to the applicant.  If your child is on a wait list(s), no further contact will be made until, and if, your child has been approved for school choice in 2009/2010.”

If you did not receive the letter above, please contact our front office immediately!  As always, please call us if you have questions about the school choice policy or anything else.

And don’t forget…we want students to come to the Fall Festival this Saturday in their costumes!

I hope to see you all there.  WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS!!
